Postcards with Lisa | Our Trip to Wave Rock with the Family

I recently packed the family up for a weekend away at Wave Rock. It’s a place that I have not only talked about for years but have also sold to many customers. It’s always been on my list of things of to experience in Western Australia. I was nervous that the kids weren’t going to enjoy the trip and miss their everyday entertainment. Little did I realize that it’s only natural for a child to still get excited by being out amongst nature.

The fun really began when we arrived in Hyden and checked into the Wave Rock resort. We were welcomed by a warm fire, an eclectic group of furniture, historic paintings and numerous board games. The board games kept the kids busy while we were able to chat with Sheenagh, owner and operator of the Wave Rock complex, and learn about the incredible family history going back three generations that have built this incredible destination.

We really enjoyed exploring the old town of Hyden, visiting the Wildlife Park, unique Antique Lace Collection and Toy soldier museum.

After a very comfortable nights sleep at the Wave Rock Resort we spent our second day out at Sheena’s family farm where we all got to get up close with nature and breathe in the fresh, country air. The kids go to hand feed the cows, run around the paddocks and play with the newborn lambs. In the afternoon we were treated to home-made damper and afternoon tea at Sheena’s mother, Val’s, cottage.

Later that afternoon we drove the kids up to Hippos Yawn, Mulkas Cave and Wave Rock. They spent hours exploring the caves, discovering all the hidden treasures and collecting twigs to roast marshmallows over the fire pit that evening.

Wave Rock is more fascinating than I ever expected. Wave Rock is a natural rock formation shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. The world famous granite cliff stands 15 meters tall and 110 meters long. I didn’t expect the kids to enjoy it as much as they did. They wanted to stay for hours sliding down the slopes of the rock and running around. All while the adults searched for signs of the tiny clown orchids which were beginning to bloom. I can only imagine how stunning the region would look during wildflower season.

Exploring the Wave Rock region should not be rushed. I would recommend allowing 2 or 3 days to really experience the most the region has to offer.
